How to Remove Location and EXIF Data From iPhone Photos
Last updated · 4 min read
Quick answer
To remove the location from one photo, open it in Photos, tap the info button, tap Adjust and select No Location. To remove all metadata, use WipePic in Safari. To stop new photos from saving the location, set Camera to Never in Location Services.
What an iPhone photo contains
Each iPhone photo contains hidden data (metadata). This data can show:
- The GPS location where you took the photo
- The date and time
- The iPhone model, the lens and the camera settings
When you send the original file, the person who gets it can read this data.
Method 1: Remove the location in the Photos app
- Open the photo in the Photos app.
- Swipe up on the photo, or tap the info button ().
- Next to the map, tap Adjust.
- Tap No Location.
This removes the location only. The date and the camera details stay in the file.
Method 2: Leave out the location when you share
- Open the photo and tap Share.
- At the top of the Share menu, tap Options.
- Turn off Location.
- To leave out more data, also turn off All Photos Data.
- Tap Done and share the photo.
This setting applies only to this one share. Your next share uses the default settings again.
Method 3: Remove all metadata with WipePic
- Open WipePic in Safari.
- Tap Browse Files and select Photo Library.
- Select one or more photos.
- Make sure that Remove Metadata is selected.
- Download the clean photos.
WipePic removes the location, the date, the camera details and other metadata. The photos stay on your iPhone. WipePic does not send them to a server.
Safari usually gives iPhone photos to web pages as JPEG files. WipePic reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, TIFF and DNG files.
Stop the Camera from saving the location
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Tap Camera.
- Select Never.
New photos then have no location. Photos that you took before this change still have their location.
