How to Remove Location From Google Photos

Last updated · 5 min read

Quick answer

In Google Photos you can remove a location that Google estimated or that you added. You cannot remove a location that your camera saved, and an edit in Google Photos does not change the original file. To remove the GPS data from the file itself, clean the photo with WipePic before you share it.

Where a location in Google Photos comes from

A photo in Google Photos can have a location from three sources: your camera, Google's estimate, or you. Google writes that it estimates a location from landmarks and from the locations of your other photos. It also says that you can change or remove only estimated locations and locations that you added. You cannot change a location that the camera saved.

This matters because Google Photos keeps its own record of a photo. An edit changes that record. It does not rewrite the photo file.

Remove an estimated or added location in Google Photos

These steps are for the Android app. The website and the iPhone app are similar.

  1. Open Google Photos and open the photo.
  2. Tap More (the three dots), then Edit next to the location.
  3. Tap Remove location.

For several photos, select them, tap More, choose Edit location and tap Remove location. If you select a photo with a camera location, Google Photos may tell you that it cannot edit it. Deselect that photo to continue.

On the website, open the photo, click Info, click More next to the location, then Edit and Remove location.

Stop Google from estimating locations

  1. In the Android app, tap your profile picture and open Photos settings.
  2. Tap Privacy, then Location options.
  3. Turn off Estimate missing locations.

Google says that locations it estimated earlier stay until you edit or delete them.

What Google Photos shares with other people

  • Shared albums: open the album, tap Share, then Options, and turn Share photo locations on or off.
  • Conversations: a conversation that you create does not include locations by default.
  • Partner sharing: all photos that you share include their location details.
  • Outside Google Photos: Google says that a photo you download and email shows the original location that your device saved, without your edits.

Remove the location from the file with WipePic

Only a clean file is safe to share by any route. The location that the camera saved is inside the file, and Google Photos cannot remove it there.

  1. Download the original photo from Google Photos, or find it on your phone or computer.
  2. Open WipePic in your browser and add the photo. You can add up to 300 files at a time.
  3. Check what WipePic found. Click a file row to see each field and a small map with a dot for the GPS location.
  4. Select Remove Metadata and download the clean photo.

WipePic removes the location, the camera and phone details, the date and time, the editing history and other hidden data. It does not re-encode the photo, so the pixels do not change. Your photos are not uploaded. To check one photo first, use the location check.

If you back up photos to Google Photos, the backed-up copy keeps the location that your camera saved. To keep new photos free of it, turn off location saving in your camera. See how to stop your camera from saving location.

Check the result

  1. Open the clean photo in the WipePic EXIF viewer.
  2. Click the file row. If the photo still has GPS data, a dot shows on the small world map and the fields show their values.
  3. If no location is left, you can share the file.

Google says that the map view in Google Photos shows only photos that have a location. After you remove a location in Google Photos, that photo no longer appears on your map there. Anyone who gets a copy of the original file can still read the location that the camera saved.

Questions

Why is there no Remove location button for my photo?

Google Photos lets you change or remove only estimated locations and locations that you added yourself. If your camera saved the location in the file, Google says you cannot update or remove it in Google Photos.

Does Google Photos remove the location when I share a link or an album?

It depends on the setting. For shared albums you can turn Share photo locations on or off. A new conversation does not include locations by default. With partner sharing, all photos that you share include their location details.

Does the location stay in a photo that I download?

Yes, if your camera saved it. Google says that when you download a photo and send it outside Google Photos, the original location that your device saved shows, without the edits that you made in Google Photos.

Does WipePic upload my photos to clean them?

No. WipePic runs in your browser. Your photos, file names and metadata are not uploaded.
