How to convert JPG to AVIF
- Add your JPG photos. Drop them on the box above, or pick them from your device. You can add up to 300 files in one batch, each up to 50 MB.
- Check that the Format is set to AVIF and set the Quality if you want. WipePic has already chosen AVIF for you on this page.
- Download the AVIF files. One file is saved as it is, and several files are saved as a ZIP.
Why convert JPG to AVIF?
You want the smallest file for a photo on a website. AVIF is among the most efficient image formats, and this page makes it from your JPG.
What to know about this conversion
- WipePic encodes AVIF with your browser when it can. Otherwise it loads an AVIF encoder (about 3.4 MB) into your browser the first time you convert to AVIF, and encodes on your device. The download of the encoder is shown as progress. A 12-megapixel photo can take 20 to 30 seconds.
- The AVIF is lossy and has a Quality slider that starts at 85. A JPG that is converted again to a lossy format can add a small amount of new loss, so keep your original.
- The Quality slider goes from low to high and starts at 85. A higher value keeps more detail and makes a larger file.
- The converted photo is turned upright using its Orientation tag, and the new file has the extension .avif.
- When the colors of a photo cannot be kept in the new file, WipePic converts them to sRGB and shows a note on the file.
Your photos stay on your device
The conversion runs in your browser. WipePic does not upload your photos, does not need an account and has no usage quota. Each converted file is also cleaned of its hidden metadata, so you can share it right away.
Questions
Does the AVIF conversion upload my photo?
No. The AVIF encoder runs inside your browser, and the AVIF is made on your device. The photo never reaches a server.
Can everyone open the AVIF file?
Current browsers open AVIF. Many older editors, printers and upload forms do not. Use JPG or WebP if you need wide support.
How much smaller is AVIF than JPG?
Often much smaller at a similar look, but it depends on the photo. Compare the size on the result.
Does the JPG to AVIF conversion remove metadata?
Yes. WipePic removes the hidden metadata, such as the GPS location, the camera model and the capture time, and then converts the picture. The new AVIF file is cleaned once more, so it carries none of it.
