Does X (Twitter) Remove EXIF Data From Photos?
Last updated · 5 min read
Quick answer
Yes for the public copy. X says that people who view your photo cannot get its EXIF data, and tests from October 2026 found no EXIF, XMP or C2PA data in the file that X served. X still reads the original file that you upload, and a location that you add to the post stays visible. Clean the photo first if you do not want X to receive the location.
What X says about EXIF data
The X Help Center page on posting photos has a question called "What happens to the Exif data for my photo?" The answer says three things:
- X reads the EXIF data when you attach a photo, if location services are on. It uses it, for example, to suggest a location.
- X may also use EXIF data for analytics, such as to learn if a device camera took the photo.
- X keeps the EXIF data for a short time to process the photo. It is not available to people who view the photo on X.
The first two points describe what X does with your original file, not with the copy that viewers get.
What two tests found
Two independent tests checked the file that X serves to viewers.
| Data in the upload | In the file X served | Test |
|---|---|---|
| GPS location, camera make and model, capture date | Removed | Narqo, web upload, 2026-10-20; isGenAI, API upload, 2026-10-19 |
| Author and copyright text | Removed | Narqo, 2026-10-20 |
| Content Credentials (C2PA) | Removed | Both tests |
| IPTC AI label in XMP | Removed | Both tests |
| PNG prompt text (AUTOMATIC1111) and ComfyUI workflow | Removed | isGenAI, 2026-10-19 |
isGenAI also found that the decoded pixels did not change and that X kept the image size. An older IPTC test from 2019 agrees: it found that X (then Twitter) removed the metadata from files that you save. Both 2026 tests are by sites that sell or run metadata tools, they used small test images, and each used one upload on one day.
What can still show your location
- The location label. You can add a place to a post. X says these places can come from Foursquare and Yelp. Viewers see them.
- Precise location with the in-app camera. X says that if you take a photo with the in-app camera and add a location, the post includes your latitude and longitude, which can be found through the X API.
- The picture itself. A street sign or a recognizable building stays visible.
AI labels on X
X says on its Help Center that it adds "Made with AI" labels when it detects AI-generated media, and that its C2PA membership and integration help it verify where content came from. X does not publish the rules. In a March 2026 test, Roboin uploaded one AI image each from ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok. X labeled only the ChatGPT image. The same test found that a label added by X could not be switched off by the poster.
Narqo's October 2026 test saw the other half of this: X labeled the post and then served a file with the AI data removed. A downloaded image therefore does not show whether the original had a label. To see what marks your own file carries before you post, use the AI metadata checker.
Clean the photo before you upload it
X reads your original upload, so the safest step is to remove the data first.
- Open WipePic and add your photos.
- Check what WipePic found in each file.
- Download the cleaned copies and post those.
WipePic removes the location, device details, date and time, author and copyright, editing history, AI labels, prompt text in PNG files and Content Credentials. It keeps the orientation and the color profile, and it does not change the pixels. It runs in your browser and does not upload your photos. For one purpose, see remove the location from a photo or remove Stable Diffusion metadata.

Questions
Does X remove the GPS location from my photo?
From the copy that other people can download, yes. X says in its Help Center that the EXIF data is not available to people who view the photo, and two tests from October 2026 found no GPS data in the served file. X still reads the EXIF data of your original upload, and a location label or the in-app camera can add location to the post itself.
Does X remove the prompt that Stable Diffusion or ComfyUI saves in a PNG?
In a test through the X API on 19 October 2026, isGenAI found that X removed an AUTOMATIC1111 prompt record and a ComfyUI workflow from the served PNG files. That test used small synthetic images and one upload path. To remove these records before you upload, see our page on how to remove Stable Diffusion metadata.
Why did X add "Made with AI" to my post?
X says that it detects AI-generated media and applies the label automatically, and that its C2PA integration helps with this. X does not publish the exact rules. In a March 2026 test by Roboin, a ChatGPT image got the label and a Gemini image and a Grok image did not. A label that X adds itself could not be changed by the poster in that test.
Does it matter if X removes the data when I clean the photo first?
Yes. X removes the data from the copy that it serves, but it receives your original file first. If you clean the photo before you upload, the original that X receives has no location, device details or AI marks.
