Why convert HEIC to PNG?

You have a HEIC photo and need a lossless PNG, for editing, for a design tool or for a program that does not read HEIC.

What to know about this conversion

  • PNG is lossless. The conversion keeps every pixel that the HEIC decoder returns, so a PNG has no quality setting. The file is usually much larger than the HEIC.
  • Chrome, Edge and Firefox cannot open HEIC. WipePic loads a HEIC decoder (libheif) into your browser the first time you add a HEIC photo.
  • The converted photo is turned upright using its Orientation tag, and the new file has the extension .png.
  • When the colors of a photo cannot be kept in the new file, WipePic converts them to sRGB and shows a note on the file.

Questions

When should I choose PNG instead of JPG for a HEIC photo?

Choose PNG when you want to edit the photo again without more compression loss, or when the photo has transparency. Choose JPG when you want a small file for sharing.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than my HEIC?

HEIC compresses photos very well. PNG stores the pixels without loss, so a photo takes several times the space. This is normal.

Does the HEIC to PNG conversion remove metadata?
