WipePic vs ExifTool

ExifTool is the better choice if you need many file formats, scripting or free software that you run on your own computer. WipePic is the easier choice for photos: nothing to install, no command line, and your photos stay on your device.

Where ExifTool is better

  • Far more formats. ExifTool reads and writes many types that WipePic does not handle, such as MP4 video, and it can edit tags as well as delete them.
  • It is open source. You can read the code and run it offline.
  • It scales to scripts and whole directory trees, and its site states no file count or size limit.

Where WipePic is better

  • No install and no command line. Drop photos into a web page.
  • It checks every result before saving. WipePic re-reads the cleaned file and saves it only if no removable metadata is left and the image data is unchanged. Otherwise it saves no file and shows the reason.
  • Several cleaned files download as one ZIP, and it works on a phone.

WipePic is not open source yet and has two technical limits: 300 files per batch and 50 MB per file. See the full list of alternatives.

Questions

Can WipePic replace ExifTool?

Not for every job. If you work with RAW files other than DNG, video, PDF or scripted pipelines, use ExifTool. If you want to clean photos in JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, TIFF or DNG without installing anything, WipePic is quicker to start.

Does ExifTool remove all metadata from a photo?

It removes metadata when you use the right options, for example -all=. Its own documentation says that deleting all metadata is not guaranteed to be complete for TIFF, PNG and PDF, so check the result with a second read.

Is ExifTool free?

Yes. ExifTool is free software and a donation is optional. WipePic is free during its launch.

Does WipePic upload my photos?

No. WipePic cleans each photo in your browser, so the photo does not leave your device.

Is WipePic open source?

Not yet. The engine is not published. ExifTool is open source.
