Remove metadata from AVIF images
Add your AVIF images to the tool above and WipePic removes the EXIF, GPS location, XMP and other metadata items from each file. The picture is not decoded or re-encoded, and the file never leaves your device.

What metadata does a AVIF file contain?
An AVIF file uses the same box structure as HEIC. The compressed picture is an item, and hidden data is stored in separate items:
- An EXIF item: the camera, the date and time, and the GPS location. A photo that was converted to AVIF from a phone photo can keep it.
- An XMP item: author, rights and editing information.
- Other metadata items, for example Content Credentials (C2PA).
- Properties of the picture: orientation, colour information and an optional alpha image for transparency.
What WipePic removes and keeps in AVIF files
WipePic removes:
- GPS location and place names
- Camera and device details
- Capture date and time
- XMP: author, copyright, software and editing history
- Other items that are not pictures, including Content Credentials (C2PA) items
- Free space and unused data inside the file
WipePic keeps:
- The picture: WipePic does not decode or re-encode it, so there is no quality loss.
- The orientation (rotation and mirroring).
- The colour profile and colour information.
- Transparency, when the file has an alpha image.
WipePic cleans AVIF files with one still image. An animated AVIF (an image sequence) is not supported, and the tool reports it instead of changing it.
How to remove metadata from AVIF files
- Add your AVIF files (.avif) to the tool above. You can add up to 300 files at a time, and each file can be up to 50 MB.
- WipePic reads each file in your browser and shows what it found.
- Remove the metadata. The files stay in the AVIF format unless you choose another format.
- Download the cleaned files. WipePic is free, and you do not need an account.
Cleaning does not remove a visible watermark or any other content that is part of the picture, and it cannot remove a record that is stored outside the file.
Questions
Can an AVIF file contain GPS data?
Yes. AVIF supports an EXIF item, and a photo that was converted to AVIF can keep the GPS location of the original. WipePic removes the EXIF item.
Does cleaning change the quality of the AVIF?
No. WipePic removes the metadata items and leaves the compressed picture as it is. It does not decode or re-encode the image.
Does WipePic support animated AVIF?
No. A file that holds an image sequence is not supported. The tool tells you so and does not change the file.
Is the transparency of my AVIF kept?
Yes. If the file has an alpha image, WipePic keeps it, together with the orientation and the colour information.
