Remove metadata from DNG photos
Add your DNG raw photos to the tool above and WipePic removes the EXIF, GPS location, serial numbers, dates, XMP, IPTC and MakerNote from each file. The raw image data and the data that a raw editor needs to decode it stay, and nothing is uploaded.

What metadata does a DNG file contain?
A DNG (Digital Negative) file is a TIFF-based raw photo. It holds the sensor data, the decoding data and a lot of hidden data. A DNG from a phone (Apple ProRAW) or a camera can contain:
- The EXIF and GPS directories: the location, the camera settings, the lens and the serial numbers.
- The camera make and model, the owner name and the unique camera and image IDs.
- The date and time of the shot, and the name of the original raw file.
- XMP, IPTC and the MakerNote of the camera maker, and private data that the editing software stores.
- Preview and thumbnail images, which are JPEG files that can carry their own EXIF and XMP.
- Decoding data: colour matrices, black and white levels, calibration and the raw layout. A raw editor needs these values to develop the photo.
What WipePic removes and keeps in DNG files
WipePic removes:
- GPS location
- Serial numbers, owner name and unique IDs
- Capture and modification dates
- The EXIF directory, the MakerNote, XMP, IPTC and DNG private data
- The name of the original raw file and other source file details
- Thumbnail directories, and the EXIF, XMP and thumbnails inside embedded JPEG previews
- Every tag that WipePic does not know
WipePic keeps:
- The raw image data, copied without decoding it.
- The decoding data: colour matrices, levels, calibration and the raw layout, so the file still opens in raw editors.
- The camera model name, because the DNG specification requires it.
- The colour profile (ICC) and the orientation.
- An HDR gain map in an embedded preview, when WipePic recognises it.
The camera model name stays in a cleaned DNG file, because a DNG file is not valid without it. A raw file that is not a DNG (for example CR2, NEF or ARW) is not supported.
How to remove metadata from DNG files
- Add your DNG files (.dng) to the tool above. You can add up to 300 files at a time, and each file can be up to 50 MB.
- WipePic reads each file in your browser and shows what it found.
- Remove the metadata. The files stay in the DNG format unless you choose another format.
- Download the cleaned files. WipePic is free, and you do not need an account.
Cleaning does not remove a visible watermark or any other content that is part of the picture, and it cannot remove a record that is stored outside the file.
Questions
Will my DNG still open in Lightroom or other raw editors?
WipePic keeps the raw data and the decoding data that the DNG format needs, so the file stays a valid DNG. Edits that you stored inside the file as XMP are removed, so the editor starts from the default settings.
Does the DNG still show the camera model?
Yes. The camera model name is a required field of the DNG format, so WipePic keeps it. Serial numbers, the owner name and the unique IDs are removed.
Can I clean an Apple ProRAW photo?
Yes. A ProRAW photo is a DNG file. WipePic removes the location, the dates and the other metadata, and also cleans the JPEG previews inside the file.
Can WipePic clean CR2, NEF or ARW raw files?
No. WipePic supports raw photos only in the DNG format. Other raw formats need tags that the cleaner would remove.
